Firebirds’ Payne to sign with Washburn football

Free State High senior Tyree Payne will sign a letter of intent to play football at Washburn University.

Payne, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound tight end, is the 12th football signee for the Firebirds this year. He’ll join high school teammate Will Malcolm at Washburn.

Payne will sign at 10 a.m. today in the Free State library.

Area basketball players to participate in Classic

Six area boys basketball seniors will compete Friday in the Kansas City Kansas Community College I-70 High School Basketball Classic.

Ottawa’s Lee Baldwin and Clint Bones, Baldwin’s Andy Hannon, Mill Valley’s Jacob Eaton, Wellsville’s Ryan Oshel and Perry-Lecompton’s Spencer Kennedy all will compete for the South team, which will take on a North team dominated by Kansas City, Kan., players.

The game will start at 7 p.m. in the KCKCC Field House. This is the first year for the event.
