Firebirds’ streak intact

FSHS nips Hawks for 10th straight victory

The theatrics continued Tuesday for Free State High’s baseball team.

This time it wasn’t a walk-off home run or another run-rule-shortened victory. Instead, the Firebirds delivered perhaps the most bizarre victory coach Mike Hill ever has seen.

“We haven’t been in that situation,” said Hill, whose squad overcame a 5-0 deficit — including four runs surrendered on wild pitches — and defeated Olathe East, 9-8, at FSHS field.

“We’re just very fortunate to be able to get a win out of that somehow,” continued Hill, whose team won its 10 straight contest and improved to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in the Sunflower League.

While the Firebirds’ sloppy start seemed to spell certain doom, it didn’t.

The Firebirds committed four errors in addition to the handful of balls pitchers Max Ellenbecker and Josh Moreno bounced to the backstop, but the biggest miscue of the day belonged to Olathe East.

The Hawks led 8-4 heading into the fifth inning, but Free State completed its third rally in the last week in improbable fashion.

With the bases loaded and no outs, FSHS’s Keaton Mishler hit a routine grounder to third base. Olathe East’s Chris Bunker narrowly overthrew Hawk catcher Adam McDonald, but still recorded the inning’s first putout.

Free State’s next batter, Paul Metzler, hit into the exact same spot, but this time Bunker did throw past his catcher allowing Scott Heitshusen to score. McDonald hastily threw back to pitcher Brennen Auerback, who was covering home. But Auerback couldn’t corral McDonald’s errant throw that allowed Jake Hoover to score and cut the deficit to 8-7.

Free State second baseman Anthony Dreiling throws to first to complete a double play after forcing out an Olathe East base-runner. The Firebirds won their 10th straight game, 9-8, Tuesday at Free State.

The second error not only allowed Hoover to cross home, but the ball wound up in Olathe East’s dugout, letting Mishler tie the game.

“I was already rounding third, and as soon as the first throw nicked off the glove I knew I was gone,” said Hoover, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.

Free State wasn’t done with its latest thrilling finish either.

Anthony Dreiling, who also went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, clubbed a chopper back to the mound that deflected off East’s pitcher’s glove and allowed Metzler to score the game-winner.

“Not the prettiest hit, but you definitely take those every time you can get them,” Dreiling said.

Hill said the same goes for improbable wins, especially when they come against a conference team that was 6-2 heading into Tuesday’s showdown.

“We always want our guys to belief they can battled back, and we love the gumption they showed,” Hill said. “But you just can’t make those kind of mistakes against top teams and get away with it. We did, and luckily we were fortunate to get away with it some how. Next time I’d rather have the lead from the start.”
