Wayne Whitney attended Raymond James Financial Services Inc.’s national conference March 14-18 in Orlando, Fla. Whitney works in the company’s Lawrence office. Workshops at the conference focused on retirement and estate planning, tax-free investing, asset allocation, mutual funds, equity research, asset management, insurance and economic outlook.

  • Harris Construction, Lawrence, has received a contract for construction of Yosemite Park, a 103,000-square-foot retail center to be located in Centennial, Colo. The project is being developed by Commercial Net Lease Realty Service Inc., Orlando, Fla., and The Woodmont Co., Fort Worth, Texas. It was designed by O’Brien & Associates, Dallas. Construction started last week and is expected to take seven months. Bo Harris is the owner and CEO of Harris Construction.
  • Kay Wolfe, Carolyn Hernandez and Linda Crabb, occupational therapists with Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., recently attended the Kansas Occupational Therapy Assn.’s state conference. The three-day conference offered education on manual therapy for the back and upper extremities, postural stability and techniques for splinting of hands. Participants also discussed trends and issues in health care. The Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. offers occupational, physical and speech pathology as well as nursing services to homebound individuals.
  • Learning Curve Inc., a Lawrence-based education company, is celebrating its second anniversary. The company specializes in designing and delivering reading, writing and math programs for children in kindergarten through eighth grades. Summer camps are scheduled in June and July.

Shawn and Susan Fowler, owners, created the model for their services by combining researched and proven educational practices. Shawn Fowler has earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education and administration. Susan Fowler has worked in special education and human resources for public schools.

  • Tena Santaularia, Pioneer Worldwide, recently presented classes at the National Halloween and Party Show in Chicago. She talked about unique and quick centerpieces for party-store owners and independent event decorators. Santaularia is an industry educator for Pioneer Balloon Co., Wichita, and a freelance event decorator in Lawrence.

Coming events

Lawrence will play host to Kansas Chautauqua, a festival of Kansas history and heritage, June 24-29 in South Park. The Lawrence Convention & Visitors Bureau is accepting applications for concession vendors.

Vendors are needed to sell food and drinks from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 24-26 and June 28-29, and from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 27.

The fee for each vendor is $25 per night, or $100 for the six nights. Sales tax will be the responsibility of the vendor. Any vendor interested in participating may contact the Lawrence Convention & Visitors Bureau at 865-4499, or by e-mail at visinfo@visitlawrence.com. The deadline is April 15.

The Kansas Humanities Council sponsors the statewide, monthlong festival.

  • Hetrick Air Services Inc., the fixed-base operator at the Lawrence Municipal Airport, is sponsoring a pilot training orientation seminar from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 7 in the main terminal lobby at the airport.

The free seminar will introduce prospective pilots to Hetrick Air Services’ pilot training program and services required to earn a private pilot’s certificate or advanced certificate. Hetrick Air Services is an authorized Cessna Pilot Center.

Linda Schumm, CPC representative, will moderate the seminar. Seminar participants will be eligible for door prizes and special introductory flight offers, including an introductory flight in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The Hetrick Air Services staff will serve refreshments.

Hetrick Air Services Inc. is located at 1930 Airport Road. Seminar participants are encouraged to reserve their seat by calling 842-0000.

  • The Lawrence-Douglas County Partnership for Children and Youth Inc. and Gould Evans Associates will sponsor a “canstruction” competition April 17 to help Lawrence food banks and community centers. Area youth groups will team up with Lawrence architecture firms to build sculptures made of canned food, which will be donated after the event.

Companies that will participate in the competition include Gould Evans Associates, GLPM Architects, Treanor Architects, Hernly Associates and Sabatini Architects. Each firm will pair with one of the following youth groups: L-DC Partnership Youth Leadership Team, First Presbyterian Church Youth Leadership Team, Girl Scouts of the USA, Bishop Seabury Academy and Trinity Episcopal Church Youth Group.

The competition will begin at 9 a.m. at CornerBank, 4621 W. Sixth St. The sculptures will be judged at 4:30 p.m., a reception will be at 5 p.m., and an awards ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. The sculptures will be on display through May 1.

  • John Watson, director of the Trade Development Division for the Kansas Department of Commerce, will be the guest speaker at the Kansas International breakfast. The event will be at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Alvamar Country Club.

Watson will offer a perspective on the effects of globalization on the Kansas business community. Watson leads a team of marketers responsible for trade promotion and the attraction of international investment.

  • Tim Weaver, Kansas Relays Meet director, will be the keynote speaker at The Kansas University Athletic Corp. luncheon series at noon April 9 at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Drive. The series is presented by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the KU Athletic Corp. The cost is $15 in advance and $17 at the door.
