Organized crime subject of KU lecture

Russian organized crime will be the topic of a lecture next week at Kansas University.

“Where Does Russian Organized Crime Fit in International Organized Crime?” will be presented by Louise Shelley, professor in the department of justice, law and society and the School of International Service at American University. The lecture is at 7 p.m. March 31 in the Jayhawk Room in the Kansas Union.

The free lecture is open to the public.

Bridge work tightens eastbound K-10 traffic

Work began this week on the Kansas Highway 10 bridge over the Wakarusa River.

Eastbound traffic will find the highway down to one lane for about two weeks, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. The work is expected to be done April 5.

Workers are replacing expansion joints and patching the deck, officials said.

Combination yard, art sale is Saturday

The East Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. will have its fourth annual “Yart Sale” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the New York School gym, 936 N.Y.

The sale features donated items as well as baked goods and “original, affordable” artwork. All proceeds will benefit New York School, the neighborhood association’s work day, the neighborhood block party and the Hobbs Park mural project.

The neighborhood association will accept donated items and baked goods for the sale from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in the gym. Tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis for artists. Artists are asked to donate 10 percent of the profits to the association.
