Stoneback third at nationals

? Lawrence resident and Kansas University sophomore Andrea Stoneback placed third in the 48-kilogram (105-pound) weight class at the National Weightlifting Championships.

Stoneback, a 2002 Lawrence High graduate, recorded lifts of 121 pounds in the snatch and 160 pounds in the clean and jerk for a 281-pound total. She only trailed first-place finisher Tara Nott Cunningham — a Stilwell native and gold medalist at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia — and Jodi Wilhite, who represented the U.S. at the world championships.

Her high finish allowed Stoneback to qualify for the Junior Pan-American Championships in September in Santiago, Chile.

It also might be good enough to qualify her for the Olympic trials May 8 in St. Joseph, Mo. She will find out when the other weight classes conclude lifting Sunday.
