Carrie and Heath Poe, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Hayden Jackson Poe, born Feb. 19, 2004, in Lawrence.

Maternal grandparents are Anastacio and Judy Torres, Belle Plaine. Paternal grandparents are John Poe, Kinsley, and Davita Dobbins, Wichita. Great-grandparents are Kenneth and Azela Dill, Augusta, and William and Jane Poe, Wichita.

Caleob King and Casey Foster King, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Noah Thomas King, born Feb. 11, 2004, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Maternal grandparents are Richard and Bonnie Foster, Leavenworth. Paternal grandparents are Tomas and Linda King, Pomona. Great-grandparents are Phil and Novella King, Pomona, and Hazel Kotrba, Leavenworth.

Rychel Johnson, Lawrence, was honored as a student athlete on the dean’s list with a grade-point average of at least 3.5 at the Johnson County Community College Awards Ceremony. Rychel is a scholarship runner in track and cross country at JCCC. Her parents are Rich and Michele Johnson.

Washburn University senior Mary Hammel, Lecompton, is one of 77 Washburn University students named to the 2004 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She was recognized during an awards reception on Thursday.

Chris Wilkins has been granted a fellowship by Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., in history. He is the son of Dirk and Ginger Wilkins, Lawrence. Chris is a 1998 Lawrence High School graduate and a 2002 Duke University graduate. He received the William T. Laprade Prize in history from Duke University in May 2002 for his thesis “Guarding the Guardians.”

Jessica Horsch, a senior at Perry-Lecompton High School, received Kansas State University’s Foundation Scholarship during a ceremony Feb. 6 in Manhattan.

Jennifer Gwaltney, a senior at Free State High School, received Kansas State University’s $2,000 Leadership Scholarship during a ceremony Jan. 26 in Manhattan.

Students representing three Lawrence junior high schools will compete today at the Washburn University College Music Educators National Conference 32nd annual Junior High/Middle School Solo Festival in Topeka.

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Assn. is having a piano recital at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.
