Sarah Shapiro has been named to the first semester 2003 merit list at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, by earning at least a 3.45 grade-point average.

Shapiro, a Lawrence High School graduate, is the daughter of Sidney and Joyce Shapiro, Lawrence.

  • Brad Reed, principal at Oskaloosa High School, recently announced Students of the Month for February. The following students were named because of their contributions to the school and community: Tyler Leonard, freshman; Joe Crawford and Kate Glanville, sophomores; and Whitney McGinnis and Erin Newell, juniors.
  • Kate Harris, Lawrence, made the 2003 fall dean’s list at Tufts University.

  • Mikael Elliott, Baldwin, has earned two scholarships from Valparaiso University. He has received the Academic Scholarship and the Bandick Engineering Award. The scholarships are renewable for three additional years if academic standards are maintained. Mikael is a senior at Baldwin High School and the son of Kathy and Mark Elliott, Baldwin.

  • Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, announces area students who made honors during the fall 2003 semester. Students who made the president’s list by earning a 4.0 grade-point average: Brett Myrick, Baldwin; and David Allen, Lena Fox, Mary Haworth, Rebecca Lysen and Marika Spurgeon, Lawrence. Dylan McClain, Lawrence, made the dean’s list by receiving at least a 3.5 GPA.

  • Ryan Rowland, Lawrence, joined Phi Theta Kappa at Garden City Community College. PTK is the international honor society for community college students. Membership is open to those who attain high grade-point averages and meet other criteria.

  • Thomas Maples, Lawrence, has received an academic scholarship from Wichita State University for 2004-2005. The scholarship is given based on academic achievement and extracurricular activities.

  • Adam Brunfeldt, Lawrence, was named to the fall 2003 dean’s list at Emory College, Atlanta, by earning at least a 3.8 grade-point average. He is the son of David Reed Brunfeldt and Dr. Joan Kraus Brunfeldt.

  • Geoffrey Washburn, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the fall 2003 semester at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average. He is a senior majoring in biology.
