‘Vagina Monologues’ staged as benefit show

Lawrence residents can see a performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” next week.

One Hundred Good Women of Lawrence, a grass-roots organization that responds to community-based situations, will present the performance as part of its “Women Speak” series. It will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass.

Proceeds will go to Women’s Transitional Care Services, which serves domestic and sexual abuse victims; the GaDuGi SafeCenter; and Douglas County Rape Victim-Survivor Services, all of Lawrence.

The benefit also honors V-Day 2004, a worldwide campaign that works to curb violence against women.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance at Liberty Hall.

Author shares stories on ‘River City Weekly’

Author Thomas Averill of Topeka tells the tale of two books in this encore beginning Wednesday on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 on “River City Weekly.”

In the first, Wes Hingler navigates his way through the culinary secrets of his parents in the spicy war between traditional and New World cuisines in “Secrets of the Tsil Cafe.”

Then Averill takes us to the imaginary town of Glasgow, Kan., where bagpipes, single-malt whiskey, haggis and all things Scottish are the milieu for the coming-of-age tale “The Slow Air of Ewan MacPherson.”

“River City Weekly,” hosted by Greg Hurd, premieres at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, with encore presentations at 7:30 weeknights, 8:30 weekday mornings and 9 a.m. Saturdays.
