Douglas Gaston, vice president of Douglas County Bank, was re-elected as treasurer of the board of directors of the American Lung Association of Kansas. Other board members from Lawrence are Hank Booth, Leah Hemenway and Gladys Sanders.

• Mike Maddox, Lawrence, has been elected to the board of directors for the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, a statewide business advocacy organization.
• Vickie Knight, David Clark and Shelley Mater received promotions at Lawrence Bank. Knight is executive vice president and cashier. Clark and Mater are vice presidents.
• Capitol Federal Savings has promoted Jenny Morgison, Lecompton, to assistant vice president and branch manager of the office in Dillons at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive. She has been employed with the bank since 1996.

Honors and awards

Lawrence-based Prosoco’s quarterly newsletter, Prosoco News, received the Magnum Opus Award for best overall design in a corporate newsletter competition that included more than 400 entries from other major corporations, design firms and universities.

The contest was sponsored by McMurry Publishing Company’s Publications Management newsletter in cooperation with the Missouri School of Journalism.

The newsletter’s readers include architects, contractors, distributors and trade media representatives.

Lawrence resident Chris Millspaugh is the newsletter’s graphic designer. Gary Henry, Lawrence, is the editor. Dot Spino, Gladstone, Mo., provides quality assurance.

• For the third consecutive year, Checkers Foods, 2300 La., has received a Top 25 honor among Chester Fried Chicken retailers. Jim Lewis, owner, said the store was ranked second. Chester Fried Chicken is a kiosk that sells freshly fried chicken using the brand, breading and fryers of HODCO Food Systems. Chester Fried Chicken was launched nationally five years ago. Checkers opened its own Chester Fried kiosk three years ago.
• John Merckling, of A-1 Plumbing Heating Cooling, was presented an award and bonus June 11. Merckling celebrated his fifth year with the company. He is A-1’s lead appliance repairman. He also works as a comfort consultant, selling new heating and cooling systems. Before joining A-1, he owned Merckling Appliance, Lawrence, for 13 years.

Coming events

The deadline for the Grassland Reserve program is July 16. The program offers landowners the opportunity to protect, restore and enhance grasslands on their property through easements and rental agreements.
