Schilling top ‘Good Guy’

St. Louis — Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, who has worked to raise money and awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and skin cancer, on Friday was named winner of the Sporting News “Good Guy” award.

Schilling will be honored prior to today’s game at Fenway Park. The winner is selected by the St. Louis-based magazine’s editorial staff. Schilling and other nominees will be profiled in the July 5 edition of the Sporting News.

“I truly believe that the Lord put us on earth to make a positive impact on other people’s lives,” Schilling said. “And I would be doing a grave disservice if I wasn’t trying to generate a tremendous amount of awareness within the community regarding ALS because awareness is what brings in the money to help these courageous people in their quest for a cure.”

The Sporting News also named “Good Guy” winners in five sports: Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, Seattle Mariners pitcher Jamie Moyer, Atlanta Hawks guard Sharef Abdur, Los Angeles Kings winger Ian Laperriere, and NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.

Stinnett to have surgery

Kansas City, Mo. — Royals catcher Kelly Stinnett will have reconstructive elbow surgery and miss the rest of the season, the team said Friday.

Stinnett, a nine-year veteran, was hitting .305 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 20 games for Kansas City.

He had been playing behind Benito Santiago before Santiago went on the disabled list June 18 because of a broken hand.

George sent to Omaha

Kansas City, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals optioned pitcher Chris George to Triple-A Omaha and catcher Mike Tonis to Double-A Wichita in the wake of the three-team deal involving center fielder Carlos Beltran.

The Royals then recalled outfielder David DeJesus from Omaha.

Beltran went to Houston for pitcher Octavio Dotel and catcher John Buck, then the Royals traded Dotel and cash to Oakland for third baseman Mark Teahen and pitcher Mike Wood.

Umpire given boot

Wimbledon, England — The chair umpire who awarded an extra point to Venus Williams’ opponent during her second-round loss at Wimbledon won’t work another match during the tournament.

Ted Watts of Britain mistakenly gave Karolina Sprem a point she didn’t earn in the final tiebreaker of Thursday night’s 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) stunning victory over Williams, the 2000-01 Wimbledon champion.
