Devil Rays hold on for 11th straight

? With their closer in Miami to be with his wife during the delivery of their first child, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays found another way to cope.

Victor Zambrano, who will start Wednesday in Toronto, worked an inning in relief, Trever Miller got one out, and Jesus Colome faced four batters and got five outs to seal the Devil Rays’ 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday — their 11th straight victory.

“We have a nice defensive ballclub,” manager Lou Piniella said. “(Danys) Baez … his wife is having a baby. We couldn’t use him. We put Zambrano in the bullpen to see if we needed him, and we did.”

The Devil Rays had scored 65 runs in 10 games to tie San Francisco for the best winning streak in the majors. This time, they made do with limited offense.

Robert Fick, a late addition to the lineup, tripled in the eventual winning run, and Rocco Baldelli had a sacrifice fly. The rest was pitching and defense.

“Nobody saw this coming,” said Carl Crawford, who scored both runs. “We knew we could win, but 11 in a row, I think, kind of surprised everybody. We’re playing team baseball right now.”

With the win, Piniella moved past Miller Huggins for 20th all-time with 1,414 victories. Piniella’s teams have five streaks of 10 wins or more. His 2001 Seattle team won 15 straight on the way to an American League-record 116 victories.

The Devil Rays improved to major-league-best 11-1 in interleague play.

Mark Hendrickson (5-5), who is 3-0 in four starts in June, had worked into the eighth inning in two previous outings, but weakened earlier this time and lasted six.

Cubs 5, Athletics 3

Chicago — Moises Alou hit a two-run homer, and Carlos Zambrano won his fourth straight decision. Zambrano (8-2) outpitched Oakland starter Barry Zito, giving up one run on five hits and striking out eight in 62/3 innings.

The Cubs took two of three from Oakland in the first regular-season meeting between the clubs. Chicago has won eight of nine to move two games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

Zito (4-4) lasted just five innings and was taken out after throwing 110 pitches. He allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out two and hitting a batter.

Tampa Bay pitcher Jesus Colome fires to the plate against Arizona. Colome earned his second save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday in Phoenix. The Devil Rays have won 11 straight games.

Expos 4, White Sox 2

Montreal — Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run homer off Jon Garland with one out in the ninth inning, giving the Expos a win over the Chicago White Sox. Garland (5-4), who retired the first 16 batters he faced, pitched his second career complete game and first of the season. Jose Vidro’s two-run single was Montreal’s only hit through the first eight innings. Jose Valentin had three hits for Chicago, including a tying solo shot off Zach Day in the seventh for his 12th homer. Chad Cordero (2-1) pitched a perfect ninth.

Indians 5, Braves 2

Atlanta — Jason Davis (2-5) threw seven solid inning to win for the first time in almost seven weeks and also hit his first major-league home run, leading Cleveland over the Braves, who have lost eight of 12 games and five straight series.

Mets 6, Tigers 1

New York — Richard Hidalgo homered for his first hit with the Mets, Mike Piazza also connected, and New York beat Detroit to complete a three-game sweep. Steve Trachsel (6-5) pitched six solid innings for the Mets, who got a two-run double from Eric Valent in their fourth consecutive victory.

Mariners 5, Pirates 4

Pittsburgh — Ichiro Suzuki hit a go-ahead double in a three-run seventh inning for Seattle, and the Mariners finally gave Freddy Garcia some run support, beating the Pirates to complete a three-game sweep. With Yankees scouts watching him for a second straight start, Garcia (4-6) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings while ending a three-game losing streak.

Twins 4, Brewers 2

Milwaukee — Johan Santana struck out a season-high 12 in eight sharp innings and drove in a run to lift Minnesota over the Brewers. Santana (5-4) struck out the side in the fifth and seventh innings and had eight strikeouts over his last four innings in winning his third straight after four losses.

Astros 3, Angels 1

Houston — Wade Miller (7-6) allowed six hits and a run in seven innings, and Eric Bruntlett hit his first home run of the season for the Astros. Brad Lidge pitched a scoreless eighth, and Octavio Dotel struck out Vladimir Guerrero with a runner on second for his 13th save in 16 opportunities. Angels starter Jarrod Washburn left the game after two innings with upper neck and back spasms. He is day to day.

Orioles 4, Rockies 2

Denver — Brian Roberts hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning, helping Baltimore end a seven-game losing streak.

Colorado headed into the ninth ahead 2-0 behind seven strong innings from Joe Kennedy, but Shawn Chacon (0-5) walked two with one out and another with two outs before Roberts lifted his third career grand slam over the wall in right.

Rangers 4, Marlins 2,

11 innings

Miami — Hank Blalock hit a two-run homer in the 11th to give Texas a victory and a weekend sweep of Florida.

Blalock’s homer off newly acquired reliever Billy Koch came after Texas closer Francisco Cordero blew a save in the ninth and prevented Kenny Rogers from becoming the first 10-game winner in the majors.

Blue Jays 3, Padres 0

San Diego — Light-hitting Orlando Hudson homered and drove in two runs, and Miguel Batista flirted with his second shutout in three starts for Toronto.

The Padres lost for the seventh time in eight games, and this one was particularly ugly. Catcher Ramon Hernandez had to be helped off the field after being injured making a putout at the plate in the seventh inning, and the fans booed repeatedly as the offense continued to struggle at home.

Giants 4, Red Sox 0

San Francisco — Jason Schmidt pitched a one-hitter to win his ninth straight decision, and Edgardo Alfonzo hit a grand slam for his second big hit in as many days for the Giants. Schmidt (9-2) was overpowering in throwing 133 pitches, not allowing a hit until Kevin Youkilis’ clean double to lead off the sixth inning. He struck out nine and walked two in his 15th career shutout and matched the longest winning streak by a Giants pitcher since Rick Reuschel also won nine straight in 1989.

Boston starter Bronson Arroyo (2-6) was effectively wild, holding the Giants scoreless until the seventh despite walking five and hitting a batter.

Dodgers 5, Yankees 4

Los Angeles — Eric Gagne struck out Alex Rodriguez with a runner on second base in the eighth inning, then finished for his 81st straight save.

Shawn Green triggered a four-run second inning with a homer, and Jose Lima (5-3) shrugged off consecutive home runs to Hideki Matsui and Miguel Cairo for the Dodgers.
