Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace, will celebrate Father’s Day during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. All dads present will receive a gift, and special gifts will be given to the following: the oldest dad, the dad with the most relatives present, the dad who has a child who has come the farthest to see him, and other surprise gifts.

Holy Communion also will be celebrated and is open to all Christian believers.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Young adult class will begin a series on “Spiritual Giftings” at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway. The Rev. Rick Burwick will lead.

Special ministry presentations to fathers, by the church’s children, will be at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Owen Carr will share in ministry at a missions conference banquet at 6 p.m. June 26 in the church’s activity center. Call ahead for tickets by contacting the church office at 843-7189.

Carr will minister at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. services June 27.

Church starts its summer schedule June 27. Worship is at 9 a.m. Sunday, and Christian education classes are at 11 a.m. Sunday, followed by 6:30 p.m. services.

First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive, celebrates its 149th birthday today. The Rev. Marcus McFaul preaches in both Sunday services, and parent-child dedications will be during the 10:45 a.m. service.

Music will be provided by a string trio for the 8:30 a.m. Sunday service; for the 10:45 a.m. service, the chancel choir will sing “Within These Walls, and the generations bell choir will play “Like a River Glorious.”

First Christian Church

The “Jayhawk Joey’s 4 Jesus” is on its first mini-mission trip this weekend.

The interdenominational clown troupe is sponsored by First Christian Church, 1000 Ky., and is led by Rita Winter, the church’s clown ministry director.

The newly formed group is made up of four 12-year-olds: Dylan Lathrom, Amber Cris, Kaily Wendt and Allegra Vieuw.

Today they will visit and perform at the Kansas Christian Retirement Home in Newton. Sunday they will participate in worship services and Sunday school at First Christian Church in Greensburg.

First United Methodist Church

“Lava Lava Island” is the theme of vacation Bible school at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

It will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, for children in preschool through sixth grade. Program features jungle gym games, crafts, upbeat music, dancing, snacks and Bible stories. Suggested donation, $5 per child. Still possible to enroll.

Same program will repeat from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 12-16.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway, will celebrate Father’s Day by giving an inspirational book to all fathers who attend either Sunday service.

Guest speaker Peter Burgos will talk about his missionary work in Asia.

Traditional service will be at 8:30 a.m., contemporary service at 10:45 a.m. Doughnuts, coffee and juice will be offered between services.

Plymouth Congregational Church

The Rev. Nancy Thellman will preach at the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday services at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church and a Lawrence native.

Plymouth Festival Ringers will conduct an open rehearsal of selections it will play during its Iowa tour in the sanctuary from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The 9:30 a.m. service on June 27 will be part of the Lawrence chautauqua celebration. The theme is “Pastor Cordley Remembers.”

St. James AME Church

There will be a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26 at St. James AME Church, 647 Maple.

Cost is $7 per person.

St. James AME Choir is the sponsor.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt continues his four-part sermon series, “The Heart of Worship,” at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Each service will offer special recognition honoring Father’s Day.

Children at the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. services will be making special gifts in honor of Father’s Day.

High school camp continues this week at Camp Wood.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Young families group of Trinity Episcopal Church meets at 6 p.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., for a potluck meal and games.

Father’s Day will be observed Sunday morning with the presentation of small gifts and a reception in the parish hall.

Sunday’s adult forum will be the first of a two-part series, “Testament: The Bible and History, As it was in the Beginning.” The program traces Abraham’s journey from Mesopotamia through Palestine and Egypt.

Forum meets at 9:30 a.m. in parish hall.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The Rev. John Conrad, associate pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Edmond, Okla., will be the guest preacher Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

Conrad, the son of the Rev. Don and Jan Conrad, grew up in Lawrence. He is visiting as part of the 50th anniversary of his father’s ordination into ministry.

Caring Committee of Trinity is organizing a collection of items to send to friends and family of church members who are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. A list of the most popular items to send is available in the church office. Committee members will assemble packages for mailing in August.

University Community of Christ

Alice Norris will lead discussion of Scriptures in the “Power & Light” study group at 9 a.m. Sunday at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive. Worship service at 10 a.m.

A vacation Bible school themed “Way to Go! Good Neighbor Tours” will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday for children age 3 and older. The week will include stories of faith from the Old and New testaments, music and crafts. Please drop off children in appropriate play clothes.

Bible study will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday and is open to the community. The class is studying the Book of John.

University Ward

Elder Nathan Markham will speak at sacrament meeting Sunday at the University Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1629 W. 19th St. He previously spoke at the Lawrence 1st Ward.

Markham will leave Wednesday for a two-year mission for the Church and will serve in the Texas Dallas Mission, where he will be teaching the Gospel and serving the people of the Spanish-speaking community.

Markham is the son of Paul and Debby Markham. He is a 2003 graduate of Free State High School and has been attending Kansas University, where he is majoring in engineering.

West Side Presbyterian Church

Boys and girls age 4 through sixth grade are invited to participate in “SonGames 2004,” the vacation Bible school at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The program features crafts, music and Bible stories from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. A light supper will be provided each day by church members. The program is open to all children under the direction of Marci Stanwix.

The bell choir will present “For the Beauty of the Earth,” by Conrad Kocher, arranged by Patricia Sanders Cota, for the special music during the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Deacons will assist with the 3 p.m. Sunday worship service at Presbyterian Manor.
