He was born March 17, 1950, in Kansas, the son of Delbert Dean and Wilma Ireland Smith. He grew up and attended schools in Lawrence.

Survivors include three sons, Mike, Lawrence, Brian and Darrin, both of Lecompton; his parents, Delbert Smith, Lawrence, and Wilma Young, Lawrence; and six grandchildren.
