David Parkinson, a 2002 Lawrence High School graduate, was inducted into two honor societies during the spring quarter at the University of California in San Diego. He was inducted into the Golden Key Society on May 5. The mission of the society is to build global communities of academic achievers by providing opportunities for individual growth through leadership, career development, networking and service. David was inducted into the California Psi chapter of Tau Beta Phi, an engineering society, on April 30. The association promotes excellence in the field of engineering and engineering education.

  • Heather Burris, Megan Luttrell and Kathleeen Richardson, all of Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the spring 2004 semester at Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Mo., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Baker University announces area students who made the honor roll during the spring semester by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

  • Lawrence resident Tiffany Maher received a master’s degree from Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo., during commencement ceremonies May 14.
  • Lauren Gantz, Lecompton; Maria Gunselman, Lawrence, and Carrie Park, Linwood, were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society during the spring semester at Emporia State University.

Toby Gettler, Lawrence, was inducted into the society during the spring semester at Fort Hays State University. The society’s mission is to recognize and promote academic excellence.

  • Brandi Hammel, Jeannie Jones and Christopher Coleman, all of Lawrence, made the honor roll during the spring semester at Ottawa University by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Andy Lithwiller, Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Science degree in music May 8 from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Mo. He also made the dean’s list during the spring semester by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • The Corporation for National and Community Service honored Katrina Teske, a Kansas University graduate and former Lawrence resident, with a Spirit of Service award on June 6 at the 2004 National Conference on Community Volunteering and National Service in Kansas City, Mo. Teske was selected to receive the 2004 Spirit of Service award in recognition of her accomplishments as an AmeriCorps member. Teske now resides in Tahoe City, Calif.
  • Brenda Anderson, Oskaloosa, graduated magna cum laude June 5 from Bellevue University, Bellevue, Neb. She received a degree in business information systems.
  • Moleta Schmidt, Baldwin, will celebrate her 90th birthday with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Baldwin. Schmidt is a lifelong resident of the Vinland community and taught in rural Douglas County Schools for 40 years. Family, friends and former neighbors and students are welcome to attend.   • David Howe, Lawrence, made the dean’s honor list for the winter 2004 semester at DigiPen Institute of Technology, Redmond, Wash.
  • Kate Lynn has been selected to membership in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing as an undergraduate student through the Delta Chapter at the Kansas University School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kan. The society promotes nursing excellence through its initiatives in research, leadership, an electronic library, programming and publications. Lynn received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the KU School of Nursing and is a graduate of Lawrence High School. Membership to Sigma Theta Tau is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders who demonstrate exceptional achievement in nursing.
  • Geoffrey Washburn, Lawrence, received a bachelor’s degree in biology during a commencement ceremony May 9 at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y.
  • Amanda Look, Lawrence, and Elizabeth Newell, Oskaloosa, are among 25 Kansas youths attending the 44th annual “Government in Action” Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. During the tour, June 10-17, about 1,400 high school students from across the nation are visiting with senators and representatives and touring various sites. The students were selected through a competition sponsored by local electric cooperatives. Look was sponsored by Kaw Valley Electric Cooperative, and Newell was sponsored by Leavenworth-Jefferson Electric Cooperative.
