Rangers tap Metcalf in 11th round of MLB draft

Travis Metcalf, holder of Kansas University’s home-run records, was selected in the 11th round of Monday’s baseball draft.

Metcalf, a fourth-year junior third baseman from Wamego, went to the Texas Rangers with the 321st selection.

Metcalf hit 18 homers this spring to eclipse Russ Blaylock’s record of 17 set in 1981. He also established the career home-run record of 29 by topping Matt Gundelfinger’s (1978-80) mark of 27.

“It is a great feeling to be drafted by such a great organization,” Metcalf said. “The Rangers have a great minor-league system, and I am very excited about the situation I have in front of me.

“I am one step closer to my ultimate goal.”

Metcalf is the highest player to be drafted from KU since John Nelson went in the eighth round (254th pick) to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001. Nelson currently is listed as a middle infielder for the Cardinals’ Double-A team, the Tennessee Smokies, in Kodak, Tenn.

Metcalf was drafted last season by the Minnesota Twins in the 38th round, but returned for his junior season and was named the best defensive third baseman in the Big 12 Conference by Baseball America prior to the 2004 season.

In all, 18 rounds were completed Monday. Rounds 19-50 will be held today.
