A Lawrence man found with mysterious head injuries Tuesday morning was recovering in a hospital Wednesday but still wasn’t alert enough to talk to police, officers said.

“We’re hoping he’s going to be able to wake up and tell us what happened,” said Lt. Dan Affalter, who supervises detectives for the Lawrence Police Department. “No logical explanations are jumping out at us.”

Travis D. Adams, 20, who was described as a grocery-store employee, pool shooter and member of a local church, was hospitalized Tuesday after his mother found him unresponsive and covered with blood inside their apartment at Westgate Apartments, 4641 W. Sixth St.

Police said Adams had facial injuries, cuts on his ears and multiple skull fractures.

Affalter said it was possible Adams either hit his head accidentally or “went out in the night and got waylaid by somebody.” Affalter said “several” officers continued to investigate Wednesday.

Adams was listed in serious condition Wednesday at a Kansas City-area hospital.

“I’d just say at this point, he’s stable,” said the Rev. Pieter Willems, senior pastor of Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, where Adams goes to church.

Neighbors said it appeared Adams left a trail of blood throughout the complex — for example, on the wall of one apartment building and on a porch swing at another building — as he tried to make it into his apartment.

Adams runs a breakfast-delivery service at Hy-Vee grocery store, 4000 W. Sixth St.

Crystal Fuller, who saw the trail of blood Tuesday morning on her way to a friend’s apartment, described Adams as “a good kid.” Fuller said she often saw Adams walking away from the complex with a pool cue in hand to shoot pool at Astro’s, 601 Kasold Drive.

An employee at Astro’s who declined to give his name said he wasn’t aware of the incident and didn’t recognize Adams’ name.
