Hack to go online to talk with constituents

City Commissioner Sue Hack will be online this afternoon to take questions from Journal-World readers.

Since the 2003 election, Hack has been the only member of the five-person commission not aligned with “smart growth” interests. She cast the lone vote against a citywide smoking ban but has stood with the rest of the commission in opposing a Wal-Mart at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The chat will be at 2 p.m. today at www.ljworld.com. Questions may be submitted in advance on the Web site.

Investigation

36-year-old charged with raping baby sitter

A 36-year-old Lawrence man has been charged with having sex with his family’s 13-year-old baby sitter.

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged the man with rape and aggravated criminal sodomy. Douglas County District Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel set the suspect’s bond at $100,000. He remained in the Douglas County Jail.

The man lives in North Lawrence, according to jail records.

Lawrence Police arrested the man Sunday after an interview at the Police Department, 111 E. 11th St., said Lt. David Cobb, a department spokesman. Officers began investigating after the girl’s father became suspicious of their relationship and called police.

Under state law, having sex with someone under age 14 is classified as rape.

The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects in sex crimes unless they are convicted.

Television

Lawrence resident featured in PBS program

Lawrence resident Roy Creek, a veteran of the D-Day invasion, will appear tonight on a PBS documentary.

“D-Day: Down to Earth, Return of the 507th,” focuses on paratroopers in Creek’s unit who parachuted into France to help clear the way for invading Allied forces.

The program will be at 7 p.m. on KCPT, Sunflower Broadband Channel 7. It will be shown at midnight Thursday on KTWU, Channel 11.

In Sunday’s Journal-World, read about Creek’s memories and thoughts about D-Day, and a Kansas University professor’s reflections on a recent visit to Normandy.
