Douglas County voters still have time to vote ahead of time for Tuesday’s primary elections.

Advance voting will be available from 10 a.m. to noon today and 8 a.m. to noon Monday on the second floor of the county courthouse, 1100 Mass.

The county’s 67 polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, which is primary election day for federal, state and local races.

Winners in races for Congress, Kansas Legislature, and county and township offices will advance to the Nov. 2 general election. Voters also will elect Republicans and Democrats to serve as precinct committeepeople.

Republicans, Democrats and independents are eligible to vote. Registered Libertarian and Reform voters must wait for the general election, unless they wish to cast provisional ballots that may not be counted.

Independents are welcome to vote in the Democratic primaries, while they would need to formally switch party affiliations to vote in the Republican contests. Change-of-party declaration forms will be available at the polls.

There are 55,789 registered voters eligible to cast ballots in the primary elections: 18,675 independents, 20,072 Republicans and 17,042 Democrats.

A new state law requires that a first-time voter, which is someone who has not previously voted in the county where registered, must show identification before being allowed to vote, said Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh.

Acceptable forms of identification include a driver’s license, bank statement, paycheck, utility bill or other form of government document, such as military, student or passport identification cards or Medicare and Medicaid benefit cards.

Anyone who needs help determining if they are eligible to vote should contact their local county election official, Thornburgh said.
