After a late rally by the Red Sox fell short, the Reds went on to win the Jhawk Baseball League game between the two teams, 13-7, July 22 at Holcom Sports Complex.

Both teams ended their respective seasons with impressive offensive performances. But in the end, the Reds were too much for the Red Sox, putting the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

“It was a good time, it was a fun season,” said Reds coach Alan Gleue after the game.

The Reds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. The runs came as a result of bases-loaded walks and an RBI single by Scott Ragan.

The Red Sox looked to make up some ground in the bottom of the frame.

After Ragan made a nice catch in centerfield, Doug Rawlings singled to bring home Nat Caron. Matthias Reiber scored on a walk to Levi Everson, Rawlings scored on another walk, Jacob Leet singled to bring home Derek Weishaar, and the Sox ended the inning down 5-4.

The Reds continued to hit the ball in their half of second inning. After Marshall Rawley singled to get on base, Ryan Gleue brought him around to score with a base hit. Then, with the bases loaded, Trevor Leslie doubled to bring home Gleue and Jeffrey Ahle.

The Red Sox got out of the inning when third baseman Leet caught a fly ball.

Down 8-4, the Red Sox came up with two runs in the bottom of the second when Tyler Skidmore tripled and scored, and Reiber scored on a wild pitch.

The Red Sox held the Reds scoreless in the top of the third. Shortstop Cody Fowler had the defensive highlight of the inning, fielding a ground ball off the bat of Christopher Langwell and firing to first baseman Caron, beating Langwell by a step.

The Red Sox closed the gap to one run in the bottom of the frame, when Tony Copp singled to score Fowler.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, Reds pitcher Christopher Langwell halted the rally by striking out Skidmore to end the inning.

Gleue and Ahle singled to lead off the fourth inning for the Reds. Both of them came around to score on hits by Connor Caldwell and Nolan Frank. Ragan kept things going with a single to bring home Frank, and the Reds reached the five-run-per-inning limit when Langwell drove in Jacob Henley and Ragan with a base hit.

The game marked the last game of the season in all the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department leagues.

The Red Sox were in good spirits after the loss, though, as the team prepared to head to Mr. Gatti’s for a pizza party to celebrate the end of the baseball season.

“We never did get that elusive W,” Red Sox coach Todd Rogers said. “But we’re going to drown our sorrows with pizza and air hockey.”
