Douglas County Free Fair runs through weekend

The Douglas County Free Fair, which ends Sunday, has a lot to offer.

To catch the latest trends, check out the fashion revue at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Building 21N at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St.

The petting zoo and pony rides will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in Building 10. Throughout the week is the animal and livestock judging, such as the Poultry Show, where Amber Alvarez-Budenbender, above, showed her reserve champion goose, Arnie Jr., in 2003.

There will be musical performances by bands such as Dierks Bentley, Dixie Road, Ricochet, Western Sunrise and Chubby Lane and the Secrets.

The Demolition Derby is sure to rev up fairgoers at 7 p.m. Friday in Rodeo Arena. For a full schedule of events, visit www.dgcountyfair.com.

Jolie Holland performs today at Gaslight Tavern

Texas musician Jolie Holland combines old-school folk with a bygone jazz singer’s phrasing. The former Be Good Tanya’s member has released a solo debut, “Escondida,” that has already made her a cult favorite. Holland will perform at 7 p.m. today at Gaslight Tavern and Coffeehouse, 317 N. Second St.

Royals, Indians face off

Dee Brown and the struggling Royals return from Tampa Bay for a weekend series against Cleveland. Kansas City will take on Cleveland at 7:10 p.m. Friday, 6:10 p.m. Saturday and 1:10 p.m. Sunday at Kauffman Stadium.

Carillon bells ring out

Sounds of the 53 carillon bells in the Kansas University campanile will echo Wednesday on Mount Oread as Elizabeth Berghout, assistant professor of music and dance, performs at 8 p.m.

Health boards seek more psychiatrists for city

Members of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center boards will have a joint meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bert Nash, 200 Maine. Board members will discuss ways to attract new psychiatrists to the city and improve mental health care in the community.
