Clemeth A. Abercrombie

A private memorial service for Clemeth A. Abercrombie, 79, Lawrence, will be later.

Mr. Abercrombie died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Barnard, the son of Clemeth C. and Etta Blanding Abercrombie.

He joined the Army in 1943. He was stationed at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., for one semester and then deployed to Europe with the 407th regiment of the 102nd Infantry Division. He served in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands before being honorably discharged in March 1946.

Mr. Abercrombie attended Kansas State University for one year before joining the Army, and he completed his bachelor’s degree in 1949 at Kansas University. He also graduated from the American Banker’s Assn. School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

He was president of Barnard State Bank and Citizens National Bank in Minneapolis, Kan., which he later merged with Ottawa County Bank. After retiring in April 1989, he and his wife moved to Hot Springs Village, Ark. They returned to Lawrence in 2000.

He married Barbara Meyer on Nov. 2, 1950, in Lincoln, Kan. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, C.F., of Wilson, and John, of Portland, Ore., a sister, Ruth Pickrell, of Salina, and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Wilson Community Foundation, the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Assn. Care Fund or Employee Education Fund, or the charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
