Ice cream social to include candidates

Big Springs — This community west of Lawrence is hoping that ice cream and politics will be a good mix.

Local and state political candidates are invited to attend an ice cream social to be held at 6 p.m. today at the old Big Springs school house along the north side of U.S. Highway 40.

“They will be free to introduce themselves and mingle with the people,” said Steve Grandstaff, treasurer of the Big Springs Community Assn.

People attending the event can bring their lawn chairs or blankets and stay until dark or until the ice cream runs out, Grandstaff said.

Clinton program to explore turtles

“Turtles in Kansas” will be the topic of this week’s Saturday Night Nature Program at Clinton State Park.

The program, which will include hands-on materials and live turtles, will be offered from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today in Shelter No. 6 at Campground No. 3.

Programs are free to campers and their guests. Members of the public can attend, but must purchase a daily vehicle pass to enter the park.
