Club news

The Astronomy Associates of Lawrence, a local club for astronomy enthusiasts, met July 9 in the Gallery Room of the Lawrence Public Library. During the meeting the NASA-produced video “Live from a Black Hole” was shown. The next meeting will be Aug. 13 in Room 1001 of Malott Hall at Kansas University. The current Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn will be discussed and a Jet Propulsion Laboratory show on the mission will be presented. For more information, click on the Web site www.ku.edu/~aal.   • The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met July 9. Nine and a half tables competed in a stratified game. Don Brennaman directed the Mitchell movement.

Playing North-South, Betty Collier and Patt Radford placed first in A. Sally Taylor and Chris Lane were second in A and first in B. Virginia Eddy and Phyllis Brownlee took third in A, second in B and first in C. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd were fourth in A.

Competing East-West, Amy Miller and Grant Sutton swept first place in A, B and C. Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro finished second in A. Wanda Durbin and Jean Otney placed third in A. Cathy Blumenfeld and Lynn Hui took fourth in A and second in B and C. Harriett Olson and Nita Scales placed third in B.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Eleven tables of competitors played a stratified game. Virginia Seaver directed the Mitchell movement.

Playing the North-South cards, Steve Phelps and Clyde Romer placed first in A and B. Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle finished second in A. Shirley Reese and Chris Lane took third in A and second in B. Lois Clark and Harry Shaffer were fourth in A. Julia Brooks and Jerry Sloan placed fifth in A. Phyllis Brownlee and Madelyn Jenks placed third in B and first in C. Judy Bevan and Lynn Hui took second in C.

Sitting East-West, Klee Zaricky and Curt Soloff finished in first place in A. Dave Piro and Donna Johnson placed second. Lois Jones and Jeff Nash were third. Karen La Force and Russ La Force placed fourth in A and first in B and C. Chuck Hedges and Yvonne Hedges placed fifth in A and second in B. Alice Leitch and Frances Vogel took third in B and second in C.

  • The Grassland Heritage Foundation and Burroughs Audubon of Greater Kansas City will co-sponsor a joint outing at 7:30 a.m. July 24 at the Prairie Center in Olathe. Mike Stoakes, Burroughs’ president, will lead a birding expedition. The clubs will then have a breakfast. Participants need to register by Thursday.   • The Knights of Columbus Council 1372 announces its Knight and Family of the Month for June.

Steve Menke is the Knight of the Month. Steve has been a knight for less than a year but has been active. He had helped with parish breakfasts and with work on the the church parking lot.

The John Krones family has been named Family of the Month. John has been a knight for 24 years. John his wife, Kriss, and their children Michele, 19, Brandi, 17, Kristina, 16, Isabella, 5, and Joey, 2, are active in the church. John helped paint the garage at St. John the Evangelist. He is on the Parish council, a eucharistic minister and cantor at the church.

Brandi is a lector. Kristina helped paint the garage and is a eucharistic minister and member of Teen life. The family helps during the church’s annual Fiesta Mexicana fund-raiser.

  • University Bridge Club announces the winners of its July 10 game. Hosts were Alice Akins, Florence McNicoll, Lois Liebert and Marian Lang.

Blue winners were Henry Wigington, first; George Bocquin, second; and Iva Koleber, third.

Pink winners were Mona Langlois, first; Jean Dunn, second; and Dottie Miller, third.
