Freedom Firsts: Lawrence’s Doug Clark and Jackie DuBois and Tonganoxie’s Wally Brawner earned age-group 5K first places in the Freedom Run July 3 in Lenexa. Jill Nesbitt-Daly had a second place. In the 10K portion, age-group seconds went to Lawrence’s Paul Boone, Karen Braman and Dee Boeck and Eudora’s Megan Ballock. Lawrence’s Celeste Leonardi earned third in her age group and Becky McClure fourth in her division.

  • Eudora Fund-Raiser: Eudora Cattlemen Protection Agency’s two- and four-mile runs, a fund-raiser for Eudora High’s cross country teams, will be at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Entry fee is $20.

  • Phenix U-12 Second: Lawrence U-12 Phenix girls softball team finished second at the ASA Mid-American Region Class B tournament last weekend in Topeka and qualified for the nationals in College Station, Texas. Team members are Anna Mages, Ottawa; Alex Zordel and Haley Finucane, Baldwin; Madison Oller and Bailey Scott, Eudora; and Lexi Smith, Olivia Johnson, Kacie Welborn, Allison Ice, Jamie Morgison and Maddy Wilson, Lawrence. Coaches are Bill Finucane, Don Zordel, Lee Ice and Marv Oller.

  • Anderson Low: Chris Anderson shot a one-over-par 73 and won last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar by two strokes over Tom Dennis. Eric Lynn was third with a 76. In net scoring, Richard Brown was low with a 65, followed by Pete Whitenight 67 and Kent Hodgson 69.

  • Ottawa Fund-Raiser: A Hole-in-One golf tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity will be Aug. 14 at Ottawa Country Club. All entrants will be eligible to win an automobile by sinking their tee shot on the No. 3 hole. For information, call Kay Pedersen at (785) 418-9836.

  • Demby, Penny Gold: Kameron Demby and Scott Penny of the Lawrence Track Club won gold medals in USATF Region 9 youth track and field championships last week in Edwardsville, Ill. Demby won the intermediate boys decathlon and high jump. Penny won the Young Men’s hammer throw. Other LTC qualifiers for the USATF nationals in Eugene, Ore., were Bridgette Berry (long jump), Iris Cliff (1,500 racewalk), Niki Miller (long jump), Christopher Smith (javelin) and Weller Ross (100 and 400 hurdles).

  • Long Drive Qualifier Sunday: A ReMax World Long Drive qualifier will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Eudora Riverview Golf Course. Winners of each of the eight divisions will advance to district qualifying this fall in St. Louis. For information, call Gary Winters at 542-3800.

  • KVSA Registration: Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. is currently forming fall league teams for youths ages four through 19. The season will begin Aug. 28. To register, go to www.kawvalleysoccer.com.

  • Ricketts Ace: Carl Ricketts of Lawrence fired a hole-in-one last week at Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City, Mo. Ricketts used an eight-iron to ace the 159-yard No. 14 hole. Witnesses were David Schlee, Lou Huber and Steve Holcomb.

  • Medlen in Germany: Former Lawrence High football player Chris Medlen, an NAIA All-American wide receiver in 2002 at St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, is now playing professional football in Germany for the Kempten Comets.

  • Orchards Scramble: Orchards Golf Course will hold a two-person four-flight scramble at 8 a.m. July 25. Entry fee is $29. For information, call Ed White at 843-7456.
