Production company making ‘rain’ in Lawrence’s downtown

Lawrence will remain dry and sunny through this afternoon, except for one very wet block downtown.

A downpour on Eighth Street between Massachusetts and New Hamphire streets, part of an advertising photo shoot for Chubb Insurance, is scheduled for late this afternoon.

A production company sets up pipes for a rainy photograph on Eighth Street Wednesday morning.

Conolly and Associates, a Kansas City production company, is setting up water pipes this afternoon in preparation for the photograph. Water will be supplied by trucks.

Though a number of parking spaces are blocked off, store managers and clerks said business has not slowed on that block aside from natural slow time during the “dog days” of summer.

“It always, I think, slows things down,” said Aaron Marable, who works at the coffee shop Henry’s on Eighth. Marable said a number of people have come in to ask about what is going on.

Even though the street is closed, “we’re worth a block’s walk,” he said.

Sakaroff’s the Salon on Eighth Street has also not seen a decline in business, employees there said.

The block will remain closed through this evening.

According to the city clerk’s office, a permit to close a city street must be approved by the city commission. The permit costs $10.
