Centenary United Methodist Church

Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St., will have vacation Bible school, “Hero Quest,” Monday through Friday. There is no charge to participate.

Church and Synagogue Library Assn.

Austin and Ruth Turney, of Lawrence, will attend the 37th annual conference of the Church and Synagogue Library Assn. Sunday through Tuesday in Indianapolis.

Ruth Turney, parish librarian at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will present a workshop on “Finding God in ‘The Lord of the Rings,'” an evaluation of the many books published recently on this subject.

The Turneys are regional advisers for the Church and Synagogue Library Assn., an interfaith organization dedicated to strengthening the work of libraries in local congregations.

Community Bible Church

Community Bible Church, 906 N. 1464 Road, will have its vacation Bible school, “SonGames,” from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 19-23.

Children age 4 through sixth grade are welcome.

First Baptist Church

First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive, continues its summer emphasis of “Practicing Our Faith” with Sunday’s theme of “Singing Our Lives.”

Included in the Sunday services will be special music from the church’s Silvertones Choir and Christy Wheeler.

All are invited to sing their favorite hymns at the 6 p.m. hymn sing. An ice-cream social will follow.

Summer adult emphasis will run through Aug. 8.

Perry United

Methodist Church

Perry United Methodist Church, St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and Perry Christian Church of Christ invite all Perry-area children to participate in “SonHarvest County Fair” vacation Bible school from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 19-23 at Perry United Methodist Church.

Enrollment is open to children age 3 through sixth grade.

There will be a special program for all children, relatives, friends and church members at 11:30 a.m. July 25, with a picnic afterward at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church.

Plymouth Congregational Church

A new assisted-listening system will be introduced during Sunday services at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The system works with a small radio transmitter that allows users to sit anywhere in the sanctuary. It is a gift from the Baxter Smith Memorial Fund.

Children in Sunday school will make their “fish pizza” and coloring books.

The Mother and Child Group will meet at 9 a.m. Friday at the South Park wading pool.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

Vacation Bible school will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 19-23 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave.

Enrollment is free and open to all children age 3 through sixth grade. Activities include games, crafts and snacks.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., welcomes the parish’s new pastor, the Rev. John Schmeidler, after all weekend liturgies. Schmeidler began his pastorate Monday at St. John.

There will be an open discussion about the Second Vatican Council, with a presentation about the background and shared experiences of a person who was in Rome during the council proceedings, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the church hall. Enter the north door and take the stairs down.

Tibetan Buddhist Community of Lawrence

Tibetan Buddhist Community of Lawrence has regular meetings from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays through August at the home of Paul Maigaard.

Evening meetings will generally consist of a video presentation by Sogyal Rinpoche, discussion of the video topic and a meditation practice session.

Those who would like to participate but do not have experience of sitting meditation are welcome to arrive by 5:45 p.m., when basic instruction will be offered.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Sunday adult forum at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will be a video presentation titled, “Testament: The Bible and History, Chronicles and Kings.”

Program deals with the rise and fall of ancient Israel as described in the Bible; presented by archeologist John Rommer.

Teachers and staff involved with vacation Bible school will meet after the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service in the Upper Room. Bible school begins July 26.

Trinity youth group will meet with the Rev. Sam Mason for pizza and planning at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the youth room.

University Community of Christ

University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive, will have Sunday school classes at 9 a.m. and a 10 a.m. worship service.

Theme of service: “Called to Act in Love.” Jeff Mercer will discuss development of a witnessing program for the congregation. Member surveys will be collected during the service. A potluck luncheon will be after the service.

Bible study class meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday to discuss John, Chapter 7. All are welcome to attend.

West Side Presbyterian Church

Sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Mission and stewardship committee will meet at noon Sunday; the Session will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Bill Woodard will take the pulpit July 18 as a candidate for pastor of West Side Presbyterian. A congregational meeting is scheduled directly after worship services to accept the terms of the call, with a reception following in the fellowship hall.
