Outlaws still sizzling at home away from home

This weekend might not be the best time for Lawrence Outlaws outfielder Mitch McPherson to leave Lawrence.

The recent Perry-Lecompton graduate appears to be falling in love with Free State High’s field.

After helping the Outlaws sweep Paola on Tuesday night, McPherson played an even bigger role in Lawrence’s doubleheader victory Wednesday night against Ottawa.

“I’m really just seeing the ball well,” said a modest McPherson, who went 8-for-8 in the Outlaws’ 3-2 and 14-8 victories. “It was just my day.”

Or two.

McPherson went 5-for-8 Tuesday, including a game-winning RBI single in Lawrence’s 9-8 come-from-behind victory over Paola in the first game.

But now the center fielder will have to take his hitting show on the road this weekend to Chanute, where the Outlaws will play in the Paul Lindblad Invitational.

No problem said Outlaw coach Matt Schubert.

“He’s amazing to watch right now,” Schubert said of McPherson, who has not yet decided where he will play next season. “He’s really turned it up a notch.”

So too have the Outlaws (18-7), especially in their new ballpark.

Normally the Outlaws play their home games in Eudora, while the Lawrence Raiders play at Free State.

But this week the Raiders are out of town, and the Outlaws are trying out the same field, which will play host to the eight-team Lawrence Outlaw Tournament next Thursday through Sunday.

“I think a lot of the guys are really excited to be able to get out here and play,” Schubert said. “We don’t normally get to play here in front of a lot of the home fans, so it’s kind of been a thrill for them the past couple of days.”

Probably not for Paola or Ottawa.

Much like Tuesday, the Outlaws squeaked out a victory in the first game — scoring two runs on two errors in the fifth.

In the second game, Ottawa took a 6-4 lead after the second inning.

But by the time Ottawa starter Brandon Bettge had thrown his 75th pitch — which was in the second inning — it was clear that the Outlaws had taken control.

Lawrence batted around in both the first and second innings to jump out to a 9-6 lead on the team it will open the Chanute tourney against at noon Friday.

Both teams plated a run in the fourth, but the Outlaws nearly achieved a run-rule victory with four more runs in the fifth.

With a hot streak in hand McPherson said he couldn’t wait to get back to his new “home” field.

“It’s be a lot of fun to play out here. We got the chance a few times last year, but I can’t wait to get back next week,” he said.
