Perry boys adjust, hammer Oskie

? Oskaloosa High threw a gimmick defense at Perry-Lecompton’s boys basketball team, but it only half worked.

Oskie ran a triangle-and-two defense — with three players playing zone and two individuals hounding Perry’s Spencer Kennedy and Drew Tucker in man-to-man defense — and though Tucker was held scoreless, Kennedy scored 15 points to lead the Kaws to a 63-39 rout of the Bears Friday at Perry-Lecompton.

“It was an interesting game,” Perry coach Pat Hupfauf said. “They played a triangle-and-two and focused on Spencer and Tucker. It took us awhile to get adjusted and get other people involved. Drew didn’t score, but that’s the trade-off. You just hope you have a team where some other guys can pick it up. I’m proud.”

Ryan Guffey scored 10 points, and Drew Robbins and Luke Tyner each added seven.

Kennedy had 10 rebounds.

Perry (6-6) will play host Tuesday to Lansing.

“We feel pretty good,” Hupfauf said. “We’ve won two games handily now, we’re back even, and we’re back in the Kaw Valley League.”

Baldwin 67, Wellsville 61

Baldwin — Ryan Jorgensen scored 21 points, helping Baldwin High hold off a late Wellsville rally.

Wellsville battled back with a fourth-quarter surge, but BHS coach Jeff Haas’ squad, which beat the Eagles last Friday, prevailed again.

“We were expecting a real scrappy affair,” Haas said. “We had some foul trouble early in the third and we went to a zone to try to protect the post, and when we did that eventually that got them really close.”

Jeremy Wright had 12 points and Chris Irick 11 for the Bulldogs (6-9).

“We did a lot of things extremely well,” Haas said. “Our help defense was better than it’s been all year. It kept us close when we went to that zone. Even though the score was fairly close, I feel good about a lot of things we did in this game.”
