Wichita revamps work force Web site

? The city, Sedgwick County and Wichita State University are working together with business leaders to boost the Wichita work force, using a redesigned Web site in hopes of attracting former residents back to the area while keeping those who live here now from moving away.

The www.wichitanetwork.com site that relaunched this week with a new look and additional features is an economic development tool that Wichita may need now more than when it was created about three years ago, organizers said.

People visiting the free site can look for a job, learn about events or send an e-card featuring buildings and events.

Organizers hope it sends the message that “Wichita is not the place you left 20 or 30 years ago,” said Kathy Sexton, the assistant county manager.

The site also aims to encourage soon-to-be college graduates to stay in town for more education or to begin a career, said Jim Schwarzenberger, vice president for work force solutions with the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce, which is also involved in the effort.

Ideally, he said, it would help boost Wichita’s work force numbers as employees from the baby boom generation retire.

“Initiatives like this are needed in order for us to basically be ahead of the competition by developing and retaining our work force,” Schwarzenberger said.

Otherwise Wichita may lose potential workers to other communities, he said.

The redesign has made submitting resumes easier and faster, said Taewook Kang, a Web developer for the site.

Visitors can get tips about interviewing, cost of living and other job-related topics as well as link to major employers Web sites.

In addition, the redesign places more emphasis on entertainment, including information on attractions and events.
