Sub-zero windchills to continue

Sunny skies and sub-zero windchills are expected throughout Tuesday in the Lawrence area, according to a local forecaster.

“It’s really going to be cold,” said Matt Jacobs, 6News meteorologist.

Jacobs said the high Tuesday will be 19, with windchills reaching a high of zero for the day.

Tuesday morning’s Arctic-like conditions led Lawrence public schools and other area school districts to cancel classes for the day.

Tuesday night’s scheduled matchup between the Free State Firebird boys basketball team and top-ranked Olathe South has been postponed.

The two teams, both in the top 10 for Class 6A, will tip-off at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Free State High School.

Jacobs said the early morning low for Lawrence was 4 degrees about 8 a.m. Northwest winds gusting up to 25 mph made the windchill minus 15, he said.

As of 11 a.m., the windchill was negative 12.

With windchills that low, “obviously you should stay indoors as long as possible. You want to put a buffer between yourself and the weather,” he said.

Tonight’s weather will be slightly warmer than this morning’s, he said.

“But it’s going to get down to 10. Winds won’t be as much of a factor. The windchill will still be around zero,” he said.

On Wednesday, the temperature will rise a bit, he said.

“We’re going to see partly cloudy skies and high of 31,” he said.
