Bitter cold temperatures expected overnight

Round three of the winter storm that’s hitting the Lawrence area is coming after midnight — a bitter cold blast that will create Arctic-like conditions.

“The low will drop to 9 overnight, with winds 12 to 24, so windchills will be well below zero, about minus 10 to minus 20,” said Ross Janssen, 6News meteorologist.

“We’ll have bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous windchills tonight,” Janssen said.

If you were outside on Monday afternoon walking through downtown Lawrence you saw a lot of snow — but most of it was blowing.

“We mostly got a dusting,” he said.

The first round of the winter storm chilled Lawrence with three-tenths of an inch of icy glaze over the weekend.

The second round, which brought several inches of snow just west and north of the Lawrence area, dropped less than an inch of snow on the city by late Monday afternoon.

“We’re expecting what little snow we have out there right now to end shortly after midnight tonight,” Janssen said.

Tuesday’s skies will be cloudy in the morning, but the sun will be out by midday.

“The winds will still be a little bit strong out of the northwest at 10 to 20. The high will be 24,” he said. “So it’s not going to warm up much on Tuesday, even with the sunshine.”

Tuesday night, there will be mostly clear skies, with light winds and an overnight low of 13, he said.

School districts that canceled classes on Monday were McLouth, Perry-Lecompton, Baldwin, Wellsville, Ottawa and Santa Fe Trail. Veritas Christian School in Lawrence also has decided to cancel class for Monday.

Lawrence and Douglas County are included in a winter weather advisory through 6 p.m. Monday.
