Now you can.

Holly Maygers, a ninth-grader at West Junior High School, displays a page of student school portraits from an early-1960s yearbook. The West yearbook staff is selling surplus Warhawk yearbooks dating from 1961 to 2003 to raise money.

Dozens of West Junior High School yearbooks dating to 1961 are on sale to the public. And more than a few have candid pictures of Weseman and Schreiner, who both used to work at the school.

“We were cleaning out a storage closet here at the school and one of the teachers said, ‘Do you know that there is, like, six to eight boxes of old yearbooks back here?'” said yearbook adviser Brandi Wegner.

Multiple copies are being kept in the collection at the junior high school and at the Spencer Research Library at Kansas University. The extras are being sold on a first-come, first-served basis for $5 apiece.

“I just think it is important to get them out to the public because someone may have a relative who is in one of them or maybe someone just wants it for a keepsake,”

Wegner said.

The money raised will be used to produce this year’s yearbook.

Wegner said it was nice to see many of the students taking an interest in the books.

“Just the other day the boys in my class were looking in the books and kept talking about how it was so hard to pick out the girls that were ‘hot,'” she said. “I guess with the big glasses and big hair, it was just too hard for them to tell.”

And students agree it’s fun to see the evolution of fashion documented in yearbooks.

“I can’t believe how short the boys’ basketball shorts were,” said ninth-grader Holly Maygers. “And then the cheerleaders had to wear long skirts in the ’60s. I definitely prefer our shorter version of the skirt.”

Some fads have faded. Gone are the girls’ big-hair bangs. Some of the guys have cut off the mullets. Socks and shirts are no longer color coded, and jeans are no longer rolled up at the ankle.

However, some of the trends evident in the old yearbooks are making a comeback.

“Flared jeans and some of the eyeglasses are back in,” Maygers said.
