Some of Lawrence’s best teachers will receive a surprise Monday afternoon.

Mayor David Dunfield will be making rounds to present the high school, elementary and pre-school Mayor’s Excellence in Education awards.

Families and students who nominated the winning teachers will accompany the mayor, along with City Commissioner Sue Hack and school officials.

The award program honors teachers who show excellence in teaching, leadership and community involvement. The nominated teachers are then chosen by a committee of city, county and school district officials.
