New rankings set up new No. 1 vs. 2

Get ready for a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in women’s basketball, with a twist: Connecticut will not be involved.

Tennessee jumped three places to No. 2 in a major shuffling of the Associated Press poll Monday, adding even more luster to the Vols’ game Saturday at top-ranked Duke.

Duke was No. 1 for the third straight week, receiving all but one first-place vote to lead by its widest margin so far.

After a week in which six ranked teams lost to unranked opponents, only Duke, No. 3 Texas, No. 13 North Carolina and No. 15 Oklahoma held the same position in the Top 25.

Houston entered at No. 25, its first appearance since 1992, and Virginia Tech dropped out.

Duke (14-1), which beat Virginia, 63-52, in its only game, received 45 of 46 first-place votes from a national media panel and had 1,148 points.

The other first-place vote went to Tennessee (14-1), which had 1,096 points.

The last time Tennessee was ranked second, it lost to a top-ranked Duke team, 76-55, Nov. 24, 2002, in Raleigh, N.C.

Duke and Tennessee each play good opponents Thursday before facing each other. Duke plays host to Maryland (12-4), and Tennessee entertains Vanderbilt (14-2).

Saturday night’s game at Cameron Indoor Stadium will be the 38th between the top two teams in the poll. Connecticut participated in nine of the past 10 such games.

But the Huskies lost to Notre Dame this week and slipped one spot to No. 5 — their lowest ranking since they were fifth in November 2002.

Two other teams ahead of Tennessee in the previous poll also lost: Texas Tech to unranked Iowa State, and Texas to then-No. 24 Baylor.

Texas Tech slipped from second into a tie with Texas for third.

Minnesota, sixth last week, became the last unbeaten team to fall when it lost at Purdue on Sunday. The Gophers dropped into a tie for ninth with Kansas State.

No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Penn State and No. 8 Purdue each moved up one spot.
