Ryun lines up with FCC chairman against ‘f-word’ on network TV

U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., is joining ranks with those who don’t think it’s appropriate for children to hear “the f-word” on network TV.

Ryun issued a statement regarding FCC Chairman Michael Powell’s proposal to overturn the agency’s earlier ruling that the “f-word” uttered on network television by performer Bono was not indecent.

“I applaud Chairman Powell for his proposal yesterday to reverse the FCC ruling that it is not indecent to utter an explicative (sic) on network television,” Ryun’s statement said.

“If passed, this would be a huge victory for families who desire to protect their children from being exposed to profane language. This proposal has my support, and I urge the FCC to pass it as soon as possible.

“It is troubling that parent should have to fear that their children might be exposed to this kind of language when flipping through television stations on public access airwaves. FCC regulations and rulings should be geared toward promoting family values rather than tearing them apart.”

Ryun represents the 2nd Congressional District, which includes much of eastern Kansas, including Lawrence west of Iowa Street.
