Pistons stretch streak to 10

Okur sparks Detroit past Toronto, 95-91

? Mehmet Okur had his best game when the Detroit Pistons needed him most — in the final period.

Okur had a career-high 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Pistons to their 10th straight win, a 95-91 comeback victory over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night.

Okur, in his second NBA season, had 14 points and five rebounds in the fourth quarter after the Raptors scored the opening basket to take a nine-point lead.

“They couldn’t guard him, they couldn’t stop him, they couldn’t keep him off the boards,” teammate Chauncey Billups said. “He was dominant.”

After the start was delayed 29 minutes because of a snowstorm, the Raptors led much of the way. They had double-digit leads in the third quarter and stayed ahead until midway through the fourth.

But Detroit rallied to extend its longest winning streak since taking 11 in a row during the 1990-91 season.

“That’s one of the best wins of the year,” Pistons coach Larry Brown said.

Okur’s two free throws capped an 11-1 run, which put Detroit ahead — for the first time since the first quarter — 77-76 with 7:06 left.

“I tried to be a superstar,” the native of Turkey said with a grin. “I felt great out there.”

Okur was 7-of-13 from the field and 13-of-14 at the line.

“If you don’t guard him, he can score inside and he can score outside,” said Raptors coach Kevin O’Neill, a former Pistons assistant. “He didn’t surprise me at all.”

Richard Hamilton, who also scored 27 points, made two mid-range jumpers and a free throw in the final minute to seal the win.

Vince Carter scored 27 points for the Raptors.

Rockets 95, Celtics 80

Boston — Cuttino Mobley scored 24 points, and Yao Ming added 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead Houston past Boston. The Rockets won their third straight road game and eclipsed 90 points for the fourth game in a row, their longest such streak this season. All four games have come following an 85-66 loss to Detroit Jan. 7 in which Houston tied a franchise low for points.

Nets 115, Wizards 103

East Rutherford, N.J. — Rodney Rogers, filling in for suspended forward Kenyon Martin, had 18 points and a season-high 13 rebounds to lead New Jersey over Washington. Richard Jefferson scored 30 points, including a 41-foot, three-point floater at the end of the third quarter, to help the Nets win for the eighth time in 10 games and the 14th time in their last 18.

Knicks 120, Magic 110

New York — Herb Williams made the most of his one game as Knicks coach, guiding New York to a victory over Orlando just hours after Don Chaney was fired. The game almost was an afterthought on another day of big changes for the Knicks. Team president Isiah Thomas fired Chaney and his two top assistants and hired Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens as New York’s new head coach.

Mavs 125, 76ers 122, 2OT

Dallas — Michael Finley scored 32 points, and Dallas beat Philadelphia in double overtime despite blowing a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter. A few hours after Dallas owner Mark Cuban tried to diffuse speculation about Don Nelson’s job security by telling Nelson he would remain coach and general manager, the Mavericks played one of their most exciting games of the season.

T’wolves 100, Spurs 93

San Antonio — Sam Cassell scored 33 points, including eight straight late in the fourth quarter, and Minnesota defeated San Antonio. Kevin Garnett had 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Pacers 85, Hawks 78

Indianapolis — Reggie Miller scored 13 points, all in the fourth quarter, to lead Indiana over Atlanta. Miller, who didn’t score his first basket until there was 6:06 remaining, hit consecutive three-pointers to give Indiana a 68-65 lead.

Lakers 97, Nuggets 71

Los Angeles — Slava Medvedenko had 22 points and nine rebounds, Gary Payton added 21 points and six assists and the Lakers beat the Nuggets for their third straight victory since an embarrassing 22-point loss in Denver last week.
