LJWC Placings: Devan Probst, Jesse Austin and Braxton Vardys of the Lawrence Junior Wrestling Club earned gold medals in the boys division last weekend of the Atchison River Rats Tournament. Seconds went to Dylan Housworth, Andy Jones and Skyler Countess. Bronze medals went to Dusty Morris, D’mitri Taylor, Robert Flaig, Mike Wagner and Ammon Austin. In the girls division, Amanda Morris and Katrina Hayes captured gold medals. Silvers went to Deidre Housworth, Misty Hayes, Bailey Cole and Jessica Bowman. Thirds were captured by Cortney Wagner, Shelby Bowman and Nikki Wagner. Dottie Housworth and Desiree Housworth had fourth-place finishes.

  • Coyotes Placers: Zach Toelkes and Scott Deo of the Lawrence Coyotes Wrestling Club won gold medals in the U-14 boys division at the Atchison River Rats Tournament. Caleb Gress picked up a bronze medal and Alex Hardman had a fourth-place finish.

  • KVSA Deadline: Feb. 1 is the registration deadline for Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. spring program. Forms are available on the Web at www.kawvalleysoccer.com.

  • Bregman All-Around Titlist: Scott Bregman of Lawrence Gymnastics Academy won the all-around in Class 1 at the Folgers Invitational Sunday in Wichita. Other LGA competitors were Jake Sakumura and Elliot Yochim.

  • LGA Competitors: Genny Salvatore and Jennifer Hornbaker of Lawrence Gymnastics Academy competed at the Level 10 Folger’s Invitational last weekend in Wichita. Salvatore was third in floor exercise, fourth on the bars and fourth in all-around. Hornbaker was fifth in vault, beam and bars. At Level 7, Kelcy Bowers won the vault and placed 9th in all-around. Other LGA competitors were Lexi Gonzales, Dianna Torgerson and Rachael Schaffer.

  • City Aquatics Honored: Lawrence’s parks and recreation department has earned the Excellence in Aquatics Award for cities in the 50,000 to 100,000 population range from the National Recreation and Park Assn. It is the highest aquatics award an agency can receive. Jimmy Gibbs is supervisor of the city’s aquatics division.

  • LYABA to Begin: Lawrence Young American Bowling Alliance leagues will begin Saturday at Royal Crest Lanes. League meeting will start at 8:30 a.m. with competition to follow. New bowlers can sign up at the meetings. For information, call Mike Miller at 864-5626. In the just completed fall-winter league, high averages were posted by Matthew Baker, Baylie Moon, Ben Wyatt, Hannah Foerschler, Zach Taylor and Dacia Sprow.

  • Holcom League Search: Holcom League officials are looking for coaches and players for their summer baseball leagues — Heinrich and Houk-Ice (ages 13-14) and Holcom (15-17). For information, call Mike Mattan at 760-0194 or e-mail to lhabacommish@aol.com.

  • Wilson, Heitzman Dominate: Dick Wilson of Lawrence and Paul Heitzman of Eudora dominated distance racing for men ages 70-74 in Kansas during 2003. Wilson and Heitzman compiled the 14 fastest adjusted 10K times in their age bracket. Wilson posted the fastest clocking at 41:52 at a May event in Des Moines, Iowa. Heitzman’s best was 42:21 at last April’s Raintree Run in Lawrence.

  • Revely Places in AAU: Irone Revely of Lawrence finished 10th out of 245 competitors in the midget boys division of the National AAU cross country championships last month in Kettering, Ohio. Kaitlyn Barnes of Wellsville was 39th in the bantam girls division and Carson Barnes, also of Wellsville, was seventh in the bantam boys division.

  • Kings Tourney Kings: Lawrence Kings won the seventh grade portion of the January Slam Missouri Valley USSSA basketball tournament Monday in Kansas City. Team members are Sean Brown, Nate Devin, Dar Fornelli, Issac Flynn, Chase Hoag, Chuckie Hunter, Denzell Payne, Terry Riley and Robbie Wright. Coaches are Sebastian Bonner and Don Fornelli.

  • KSG Competitors: Brendan McGarity of Kansas School of Gymnastics won the Class 5 rings at the Folger’s Invitational last Sunday in Wichita. Other KSG boys competitors were Noel Fisher, London Noll, Miller Wolf, Akram Laytimi, Nathan Shobe, Worth Singles-Smith and Morgan Rego. KSG girls competitors were Brooke Leslie, Jindalae Suh, Maria Carvajal, Meglin Rego, Amber Weeks, Erin Mayer, Rosie Schaumburg, Annie Soderberg, Jacqueline Zaitz, Abbey Bays, Mariah Anstaett, Rachel Rasmussen and Caitlin Haig.
  • Alvamar Ace: Ken Mitchell recorded a hole-in-one Wednesday on the 155-yard No. 15 hole at Alvamar Country Club. Mitchell used a 7-wood for the ace, which was witnessed by Bob Watkins and Frank Evans.
