Construction will soon begin on the city’s latest roundabout at 19th Street and Barker Avenue. It should be complete by midsummer.

The roundabout, which will cost $267,000, will be the city’s fifth. The others are at Harvard Road and Monterey Way; Inverness Drive and 24th Place; Inverness Drive and Sunflower Park; and Overland and Congressional drives.

The city also has four permanent “traffic-calming circles” — similar to, but smaller than, roundabouts — and six temporary circles scattered throughout town. A new traffic circle is being constructed at 17th and New Hampshire streets.

The roundabouts and circles are designed to slow traffic but keep it flowing without stops.

David Woosley, the city’s traffic engineer, said the devices were working “good, as far as we know.”

“We don’t have any high crash rates at any of the locations,” he said. “The only crashes we’ve had, that I know of, have been single vehicles trying to go through the intersection too quickly. We haven’t had any vehicle-to-vehicle crashes.”

Construction of the new roundabout will close 19th Street, from Barker to Haskell avenues, starting Thursday.
