K.C. woman converts garage into colorful bed and breakfast

If a trip to the Alps isn’t in the budget this year, a trip to Vienna Woods Bed and Breakfast in Kansas City, Mo., might be the next best thing.

This colorfully painted inn has been painstakingly decorated to resemble a Swiss chalet. Owner Barbara Smith, an artist and accomplished furniture maker, converted a two-and-a-half story garage on her wooded acreage into an inviting getaway that sleeps up to five people.

Smith’s creative handiwork is evident throughout the bed and breakfast. Whimsically painted chairs, tables and cabinets combine with an eclectic mix of patterned fabric and wallpaper to create eye-popping decor in the kitchen in the lower level. Vienna Woods guests enjoy check-in hors d’oeurves and a full breakfast at the harvest table that seats eight. A full bath, off the kitchen, features a shower and full bath.

A natural pine open beamed sitting area awaits guests on the second level, decorated with a Victorian feel. Behind one of two beautifully crafted screens is a semi-private trundle bed. The adjacent master bedroom with full-sized antique brass bed is enclosed and offers a full bath with claw-footed tub. The ship ladder leads to a charming loft bedroom with wrought-iron bed.
