Athletes of the week

Josie Polk

Lawrence High

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

The week: Polk scored 31 points Friday in a 76-66 loss to Kansas City (Mo.) Hickman Mills. She hit five three-pointers and had an 11-point second quarter outburst. Polk is averaging 26 points a game for Lawrence (2-2), including a perfect 14-of-14 shooting from the free-throw line.

Comment: “Josie Polk has probably improved year in and year out more than any player I have coached,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “She has gotten in the weight room and gotten stronger, worked on her ball handling skills, became a better defender and passer, and has also shown great work ethic and leadership at practice.”

Lee Baldwin

Ottawa

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

The week: Baldwin propelled Ottawa to a fast start in 2004, leading the Cyclones to victories over Baldwin and Spring Hill. Against the Bulldogs, Lee Baldwin scored a game-high 17 points in a 69-46 Cyclones victory. He followed that effort up with a 20-point outburst in an 85-64 Ottawa victory against Spring Hill. For the season, he is averaging 21 points a game for the Cyclones, now 6-1 overall.

Comment: “The biggest thing is he’s 54-of-59 from the free-throw line,” Ottawa coach David Grover said. “That’s one of those things that’s always overlooked.”
