Great Bend bakery killings continue to baffle police

? Somebody, somewhere, knows something about who killed Mary Drake and Mandi Alexander in a Great Bend bakery on Sept. 4, 2002. But not even a reward fund that now exceeds $20,000 has produced any clues that could help could solve the case.

“What we need, and what we can’t find, is the person out there who’s got a shred of information they haven’t provided us before,” Police Chief Dean Akings said.

A delivery driver to the Dolly Madison Cake-Discount Bakery found the bodies of Drake, a 79-year-old customer, and Alexander, a 24-year-old clerk, in the back office. They had been killed with a sharp object, but a weapon has never been found.

The investigation may go to the KBI’s cold-case squad, which reviews stagnated cases.

“They’ve had excellent success working old cases,” said Kyle Smith, assistant director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Mary Drake’s granddaughter said the family appreciated the efforts made so far but would also support sending the investigation to the KBI.

“We’re just baffled,” said the granddaughter, Michelle Drake. “We really think that we’re still waiting for that one missing piece of the puzzle, where the person comes forward and says they saw something.”
