Pembroke Hill pounds Baldwin; Tongie, SFT cruise

? Maybe Baldwin High should have left this date on its girls basketball schedule open.

The Bulldogs, who had an open date thanks to a late bye in the Wellsville tournament, picked up a game with Kansas City (Mo.) Pembroke Hill, and Pembroke rocked BHS, 46-22, Tuesday.

“Nobody wanted to play us,” Baldwin coach Eric Toot said, “so we called some bigger schools, and the No. 1 team in Missouri wanted to play us.”

Pembroke Hill’s Erneisha Bailey, a University of Texas signee, single-handedly outscored Baldwin. She had 26 points.

“We saw an extremely quick team, unlike we’ve ever seen,” Toot said. “That Bailey girl … she’s the best player we’ve ever played against. But we were able to compete with them on the defensive end. Offensively, their quickness took us out of what we were trying to do.”

Emily Brown led BHS with seven points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs (15-4) have lost two straight. They’ll face Louisburg Thursday, with the Frontier League championship on the line.

“I think we’re struggling with confidence a little bit,” Toot said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve lost two in a row. But we know we competed hard. We’ll bounce back. We’ve got Louisburg coming in, and if we win it’s for the league championship. Plus, it’s Senior Night, so they should be able to get up for it.”
