Civil War historian to give John Brown talk

A Civil War historian and author of several books on abolition will speak Wednesday at the Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University.

Michael Fellman, professor of history at Simon Fraser University in Canada, will speak at 7 p.m. in the Simons Media Room. His talk is titled “John Brown’s Body: Terrorism and the Construction of American Society.”

KU students nominated for Truman scholarships

Three Kansas University students have been selected to compete for Truman scholarships, awarded to college students preparing for leadership in public service. They are:

  • Elizabeth A. Franklin, a junior from Cedar Falls, Iowa. Franklin plans a career in public policy working to improve sexuality education to help reduce unwanted pregnancies and the transfer of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Shannon Kreiser Portillo, a senior from Lake Quivira. Portillo plans to pursue a career concerning civic education in schools.
  • Christopher B. Wiles, a senior from Leavenworth. Wiles plans a career in domestic or foreign policy.

A national committee that reviewed applications from the 600 nominees today will announce the 200 finalists who will compete for the 75 to 80 scholarships. The winners will be announced in March.
