Eric Spray and Colin Hamel, both of Lawrence, made the president’s list for the 2003 fall semester at Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio, by earning a 3.4-4.0 grade-point average. Spray, a 2003 graduate of Free State High School, is the son of Larry and Tammy Spray. Hamel, a 2003 graduate of Lawrence High School, is the son of Richard and Nancy Hamel.

  • Craig and Leticia Wingfield Eastman, Elmwood, Neb., announce the birth of a son, Wyatt Sheldon Eastman, born Jan. 18, 2004, in Lincoln, Neb. Maternal grandparents are Richard and Norraine Wingfield, Lecompton. Paternal grandparents are Jim and Rose Eastman, Eskridge. Great-grandmother is Dorothy Davis, Green Valley, Ariz.

  • Becky and Dan Twedt, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Anna Mae Twedt, born Oct. 30, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Greg and Bonnie Gilroy, Ottawa, and Shirley Gilroy and Dennis Woolman, Ottawa. Paternal grandparents are Mike and Judy Twedt, Ottawa.   • Matt and Nikki McClure, Manhattan, announce the birth of a son, Jacob Stephen McClure, born Feb. 4, 2004, at the Regency Medical Hospital in Manhattan. Maternal grandmother is Cecilia Julius, Peck. Paternal grandparents are Steve and Angie McClure, Lecompton.   • Darya Alexander and Matthew Snyder, Ann Arbor, Mich., announce the birth of a son, Dean Alexander Snyder, born Feb. 4, 2004, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Maternal grandparents are John and Maria Alexander, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Donald and Karen Snyder, Topeka.

  • Corinne Brinkerhoff, Los Angeles, received a master’s degree in television from Boston University on Jan. 18. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Truman State University in 2002. She works for David E. Kelley Productions in Los Angeles. She is the daughter of Cory and Cindy Brinkerhoff and is a 1998 graduate of Lawrence High School.

  • Lawrence schools dominated at the Washburn Rural Scholastic Chess Tournament Feb. 7 in Topeka. In the High School Division (K-12), Southwest Junior High finished second, Quail Run School finished third, and Wakarusa Valley School came in fourth. In the Elementary Division (K-6), Quail Run finished first and Wakarusa Valley placed second.

Receiving individual medals in the K-12 Division were Benjamin Greenberg, Southwest, second; Jena Games, Southwest, fourth; Austin Kelly, Lawrence High School, sixth; Anjali Datta, Southwest, seventh; Kellen Cross, Quail Run, 11th; Roy Wedge, Wakarusa Valley, 12th; Thomas Reams, Quail Run, 14th; Sean Stenseng, Southwest, 17th; and Benjamin Harms, Wakarusa Valley, 20th.

Individual medalists in the K-8 Division were Stephanie Brown, Southwest, 13th; Matt Vandruff, South Junior High, 14th; Steven Hamblen, Southwest, 15th; and Alex Chavez, South, 18th.

  • The Lawrence Catholic Community donated $500 to the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. It raised the money through two dances and a chili feed. Sponsors of the events were St. John the Evangelist, Corpus Christi, Knight of Columbus Councils 1372 and 12960 and the Daughters of Isabella St. Jude Circle 1127.

  • Nathanael Smith, Tonganoxie, has been accepted to the Universal Technical Institute, Phoenix, where he will train to become a professional automotive technician.

  • William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., announced Lawrence students who made the fall 2003 dean’s list by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average: Christy Wheeler, daughter of Dale and Wendy Wheeler; Jenilee Morrison, daughter of David and Pamela Morrison; and Lauren Wright, daughter of Craig and Marilyn Wright.
  • Lyjah White, Oskaloosa, made the fall 2003 dean’s list at Dodge City Community College by earning a 3.5-3.79 grade-point average.
  • Evan Durnal, Baldwin, received the $2,500 Nathaniel G. Symonds Scholarship-Leadership Award from the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund. He is an initiate of the Beta-Tau chapter at Baker University, where he is a junior majoring in molecular bioscience. A 2001 Baldwin High School graduate, he is the son of Betty Bullock and Chet Durnal.

  • Leslie Short, formerly of Lawrence, made the 2003 fall semester dean’s list at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C., by achieving at least a 3.0 grade-point average.
  • Eric Southard, Lawrence, earned the distinction of faculty honors for the fall 2003 semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.
