Buzzer-beater dooms Lions

? Maureen Healy banked home a 12-footer with one second remaining, lifting St. Teresa’s to a 45-44 girls basketball victory Wednesday over Lawrence High.

The Lions squandered a seven-point fourth-quarter lead, but went ahead 44-43 on two free throws by Megan Klingler with 17 seconds left.

“We didn’t do a very good job of taking care of the ball,” LHS coach Kristin Mallory said. “At the end, we had opportunities to put the game away, and we didn’t.”

Klingler, who went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, led the Lions with 20 points. Cherrale Ricks added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Erin Knight had 10 points. Only one other LHS player scored — Sydney Wilson with two points.

“It was a disappointing loss,” Mallory said.

Wednesday’s loss was the fourth game in six days for the Lions (9-6).

“It really was a factor,” Mallory said of the grueling schedule. “The girls came out really tired.”

The Lions will make it five games in eight days when they play Friday at Olathe East. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
