A two-alarm fire that damaged a house in southern Lawrence this afternoon also killed an Amazon parrot and several other birds, according to the owner, Marie Gibbon.

Gibbon and her husband, John Gibbon, weren’t home when the blaze at 1124 W. 27th St. was reported at 2:57 p.m. to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical. Marie Gibbon arrived home after firefighters had extinguished most of the fire.

Flames were found in the kitchen, roof and attic areas, Fire & Medical Chief Jim McSwain said. The cause of the fire was under investigation but was not considered suspicious, McSwain said.
