Three KU soccer players honored

Jayhawks land trio of All-Americans

The most successful season in Kansas University women’s soccer history has led to the greatest honor for three Jayhawks.

Holly Gault, Meghan Miller and Caroline Smith were named to the NSCAA/adidas All-American squad Friday. Gault, a sophomore defender, was a first-team selection; Miller, a senior goalkeeper, was named to the second team; and, for the second season in a row, Smith, a junior forward, was tapped for the third team.

“It is a huge honor,” KU coach Mark Francis. “Last season, Caroline was selected to the third team, and that was our first player to ever receive the honor. This season, to get three players on the All-American team is a reflection that other teams and coaches are beginning to recognize our team.”

Gault, of Spring Hill, anchored a KU defense that surrendered only 13 goals all season and finished ninth in the country with a team goals-against average of 0.55. Gault finished fourth on the club with 13 points, tallying four goals and five assists, including a career-high two assists in the Big 12 Conference championship-clinching match against Iowa State.

Miller, of Seattle, finished her career by posting the best season by a goalkeeper in school history. She led the Big 12 in goals-against average (0.57) and save percentage (.881) and finished second in shutouts (12).

Smith, of Edina, Minn., led KU in scoring for the third consecutive season. Smith topped the Jayhawks in goals (11), assists (10) and points (32).
