LHS girls shut down Washington

? Lawrence High’s basketball team used a stifling defensive performance to earn its first victory of the season, 56-35, Monday night at Kansas City Washington.

The Lions recorded 21 steals, including five apiece for Kayla Nolte, Sydney Wilson and Lacey Elmore.

“Defensively, we played excellent,” Lawrence coach Kristin Mallory said. “Lacey really set the tone for us. She played their point guard, really pressured her and caused turnovers.

“They were a very athletic and fast team, and our girls did a good job of taking them out of their game plan.”

Offensively, Megan Klingler was the spark plug for the Lions, leading the way with 20 points, and was complemented by Drew Huff’s 11.

Lawrence (1-1) will travel Friday night to K.C. Wyandotte.
