Martz unsure when Pace will return

? St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz said Tuesday he still didn’t know when — or if — offensive tackle Orlando Pace would end his holdout.

That’s because Martz hasn’t heard from the five-time Pro Bowler since the end of last season.

“I don’t know what kind of shape he’s in, what he’s been doing,” Martz said. “He has not returned any calls to our players or our coaches.”

“I think that’s the business aspect through his agent; that’s the hard part of it.”

The Rams certainly appear to need the help on the offensive line. The Kansas City Chiefs registered five sacks in a 24-7 preseason victory Monday night over St. Louis, and they pressured Rams quarterbacks all night.

The line has been torn apart by injuries.

Right tackle Kyle Turley remains out because of a back injury, and his return is uncertain.

Backup tackle Grant Williams played Monday despite an ankle injury and may not play Friday when the Rams, 0-2 during the preseason, entertain the Washington Redskins. And St. Louis cut center Dave Wohlabaugh because of a hip injury.

Falcons

Michael Vick returned to practice after missing a day because of tightness in his right hamstring. Atlanta’s quarterback participated in the full workout, which lasted over two hours, and reported no problems. He first tweaked the hamstring in practice on Aug. 5 before irritating it in the second quarter of last week’s preseason win over Minnesota.

Bills

Rookie quarterback J.P. Losman was taken off the field Tuesday because of an injury to his left ankle. Losman was hurt an hour into practice as he finished a run. As Losman was pulling up, cornerback Troy Vincent laid a shoulder into his upper body, knocking the quarterback over.

Vikings

Cornerback Derek Ross, who tied for the NFL rookie lead in interceptions two years ago, was signed Tuesday by Minnesota.

Texans

Defensive end Gary Walker will rest for a week to 10 days to allow his strained groin to heal. Walker, the Texans’ two-time Pro Bowl lineman, tweaked the muscle during practice Monday and was helped off the field. The team was worried enough about the injury to call for an MRI, which revealed a mild strain.

Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens wrapped up training camp without even taking the field at McDaniel College. The reason: their loss at Philadelphia in the second preseason game and center Mike Flynn’s broken collarbone. A Sunday afternoon workout was scrapped, as was Tuesday morning’s scheduled 90-minute finale.

Packers

The Green Bay Packers just can’t get their starting offensive line on the field. Left guard Mike Wahle (bruised leg) made his training camp debut Tuesday, but his return was dampened when left tackle Chad Clifton sat out because of a sore left knee.

Lions

The Detroit Lions signed undrafted rookie Stevie Baggs, out of Bethune-Cookman College, to help add depth to an injury-depleted linebacker corps.
