The Lawrence Visitor Center needs friendly volunteers who will greet visitors, share information about Lawrence attractions and accommodations, and assist with answering phones and assembling mailings. Shifts can be as short as two hours one day a week, mornings or afternoons, Tuesday through Saturday.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Assn. needs volunteers for a community garage sale benefit on Saturday. Volunteers can help receive and organize donated merchandise from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday or assist during the actual sale between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. The sale will be at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, 325 Maine. Individual and groups of volunteers are welcome. For more information, call 840-3141.
  • Hospice Care in Douglas County needs caring and compassionate people willing to provide support to individuals and their families during the end of life. A volunteer training workshop will be offered in late September, spread out over two weeks. The 18 hours of training prepare volunteers for their assignments with patients and families.   • Volunteer counselors at Headquarters Counseling Center are available to talk to children and adults about any concern 24 hours every day. To keep providing these services, Headquarters needs additional volunteers and is offering two information sessions for interested people, one at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Mercantile, 901 Iowa, and another at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt., in the Gallery Room.   • Lawrence is celebrating its 150th birthday in September. Volunteers can help with event set-up for the Lawrence Sesquicentennial birthday festival from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 in South Park on Massachusetts Street.
